Hell and Back

I held a boy that was crying today.
He was at the place where he plays.
He told me daddy is usually gone.
And at night momma leaves home.
Tell me what were they doing?
Where do they go when they do it?
I started asking the neighbors.
They say his momma’s on the street
(Just trying to make ends meet).
(Chorus)
She’s been through Hell and Back
She’s got a baby, and that’s a fact.
She’s going through Hell and Back
Trying to forget (it hurts so bad).
Had a talk with his daddy today.
Says his life’s in disarray.
Nobody’s working ‘till after nine.
When his wife leaves ‘round that time.
All he wants is a chance to.
Prove what he can do.
He had a job at the factory.
But it ain’t coming back
(And daddy didn’t count on that).
(Chorus)
He’s been through Hell and Back.
He’s got a baby, and that’s a fact.
He’s going through Hell and Back.
Wished he could be a better dad.
They’ve been through Hell and Back.
Can’t feed the baby, and that’s so sad.
They’re going through Hell and Back.
Why’d this family get hurt so bad?
It seemed like yesterday.
When things all went their way.
Now they can’t keep the home.
Times just got hard, the baby ain’t ate.
He can’t find work.
Now she leaves home late.
So he left her a note.
Says nobody cares.
So he won’t be missed.
Then she screamed,
Don’t leave us like this...
